Reflections on this comic: 6/17/2016
Many movies, tv shows and blogs talked a lot about what cancer treatment can be like, but very little about what it's like to listen to other people without cancer attempt to talk to you about it. Because cancer is still such a taboo topic (and it shouldn't be) I think causes people to trip over themselves trying to have a conversation about it.
I'll admit, this comic uses a lot of hyperbole...at least in my case. After releasing this, I had people write me asking, "Someone actually said this to you?!" And my answer was "yes and no". It's exaggerated for comedy sake...but yeah, I've had some people say some pretty insensitive crap.
I had a coworker ask me when I was going to get all skinny and wither away. When I had an ostomy bag, I had another coworker tell other coworkers he could smell my bag. I've had a friend (who never had cancer) tell me how to be a better cancer patient, and dismissed me by saying, "You have no idea how much I suffered!" That same friend wrote me after I released a Gofundme account to let me know he would not be donating because he was going on a cruise.
Don't get me wrong, most folks are awesome...but some people need a little work. And I advise anyone newly diagnosed not to let the crazy insensitive people keep you from experience the vast awesomeness you'll be shown.
