How They See Me...
Reflections on this comic, 6/3/2016
This one is one of my most widely circulated.
Cancer is still a "C word"...something you're not supposed to bring up. Largely this is because there is still a lot of miseducation about cancer, and Hollywood's done a lovely job of keeping the idea that cancer means a death sentence.
So when you tell people "I have cancer", what they hear is "I'm going to die". And while cancer does indeed kill people, cancer is NOT the death sentence that it used to be. There are lots of people-my best friend included- who are living with terminal cancer as a chronic disease to be managed. My friend has stage 4 brain cancer and was given a year and a half to live, but is living life to the full 3 years later. My mentor is a colorectal cancer survivor of 11 years. He exercises daily and travels the world with his beautiful family.
Cancer is very, very serious, but one thing that doesn't help is to catastrophize the diagnose.
We might have cancer, but we're not dead. Treat us like we're alive.
