Sometimes there's just no punchline. Sometimes an act or statement is a punchline itself.
This story sat in my sketchbook for months, completely at a loss on how to tie it up and make it work for a comic, but then I realized that some things are best told as is. The only real punchline here is that this happened to someone. What else is there to add?Well, my answer is that it's up to you. How you live and treat others, especially others who are suffering, is up to you.
While I created Bunny Emma to be a bit smallish (for dramatic effect), the real Emma Stewart is a complete triathlete BADASS. Here, just look at this feature about her!! The real Emma is no victim, but obviously the words of "the mean girl" made enough of an impact that she would write me about the experience. Sometimes we don't realize the impact of our words, and we're all equal opportunity offenders.
Here's Emma's own words and a photo:
"I had a double mastectomy during breast cancer treatment, I am 35, and was a bridesmaid, had to go to a poolside bachelorette, which involved wearing a bikini.
i had someone tell me (lets call her a mean girl) that they cant imagine their husband would love them anymore if they didn't have boobs... and that I am so lucky insurance will now pay for my implants, she wished she could get her insurance to pay for new implants like me."
