This last weekend, I presented Cancer Owl at Stanford University's Medicine X Conference, and I was surrounded by some of the brightest minds in medicine. And most surprising to me was the self awareness that these doctors had when it came to actually connecting with their patients. In fact, I thought they were rather hard on themselves. "We can do better for our patients" is what I heard over and over.
Bedside manner, or lack thereof, is a sore topic for many cancer patients I speak with. It's not really something that's covered in medical school. So I really appreciated Berta Ramirez's response that so many of us would like to say. Cancer is hard enough, but a clueless doctor with no bedside manner is just about enough to make a cancer peep snap.
My primary Doctors started receiving all the reports from the other Doctors and hospital. The first thing that comes out of her mouth is. Wow you look great you lost a lot of weight.
I looked at her and said really?
I have cancer and for one year you are saying that I had a virus.
You are excited that I lost weight.. Really??
