I had an ostomy bag for nine months while my colorectal cancer resection surgery was healing, and I freaking LOVE this story! For a couple of reasons:
For one, it's just hilarious. An ostomy bag emptying can be a shocking thing to see and smell. I can only imagine how long it took for the TSA agent to recover.
But secondly, and more importantly, it brings some vindication for those who live with an ostomy. They are often embarrassing, especially for those new to having one. I mean, it's a bag of shit you carry directly under your shirt. And it comes out from an intestine pulled out through your skin. And add to that they irritate the skin very easily, can leak through your shirt or explode onto your pants with very little warning.
But the protagonist in this story, with his grin and willingness to empty the bag to a guy interrogating him, is a great example of the kind of attitude many ostomates learn to have. Making the most of their new normal, they learn to not be ashamed any longer. This true story is a great example of the kind of how to make the most of a challenging situation.
